I wish that I controlled the skies.

The climate is changing, quickly.

This is the latest start to winter I’ve ever had in 18 winters out in CO.

Our ski hill still is not opened and the 10 day models don’t look too promising.

All I want to do is ski!

But that’s besides the point. We live on the Great Divide, at the headwaters of water headed both east and west.

The water that originates on the divide flows to the Colorado which supplies places like Las Vegas, Phoenix and all points in between.

The Colorado River used to flow to the Gulf of Mexico, but it doesn’t reach there any longer.

The river supply depends on the snowpack. On a low snow years the rivers and reservoirs don’t fill up.

It is depleted from over draining for agriculture and entertainment (ie; green grass and lush foliage in the desert).

We might not see the affects of low snow year immediately and one bad year won’t be too hard, but the other major factor is wildfires.

Colorado has been the non-consensual host to the invasive bark beetle. For the past 15ish years, the beetles have been killing the evergreen trees at an increasing rate. More than 1/2 the trees on the pass here are dead.

The only ways those suckers die is from sustained sub 0°F temps (which no longer happen) or from fire.

Fire is a natural part of the forests ability to regenerate and repair itself, but humans have claimed the land as their own and have taken every possible preventative measure to put fires off.

When it goes, it’s going bigger than ever recorded. Everytime. Which adds to greenhouses gasses. Which raises the temp of the planet. Which contributes to climate change.

So, it’s more than simply wanting to have a white Christmas, or skiing powder…it’s about the future of humanity on this perfect planet.

Every step towards sustainability is a step in the right direction.

This is all of our problem. One human race, one planet.

Pray / dance / [wo]manifest for snow.
